A fantastic annual green season special in Zambia's South Luangwa
National Park, offering a paradise to birders and safari enthusiasts
alike, as specialist guides search for the elusive African Pitta.
The spectacular and elusive African (or Angola) Pitta arrives in Zambia's
South Luangwa National Park in early December to breed. It is most
vocal during December whilst attracting a potential mate. The "pitta
patch" in the National Park is also home to other exciting birds
- Narina Trogon, African Broadbill and White-throated Nicator - all
calling loudly in the thickets along the Mushilashi River. Other creatures,
small and large inhabit the same thickets - Four-toed Elephant Shrew,
Bushbuck, Elephant and Lion. Not a place to venture into without an
expert guide and an armed scout.

Highlights
Specialist Guiding:
Join ornithologist and specialist professional guide Derek Solomon
on this 4-night wildlife experience in South Luangwa whilst enjoying
the luxury and hospitality of Mfuwe Lodge inside the National
Park. Derek is currently undertaking a survey of the birds and
amphibians of the Park and is also studying underwater communication
in Hippos.
Specialized Sound Equipment:
Enjoy drives in an open safari vehicle fitted out with his specialized
sound equipment that allows you to listen to the amplified sounds
of the bush via multi-user headphones.
Superb Birding & Game Viewing:
Over 450 species of birds have been recorded in the Park and surrounding
area - Lilian's Lovebird, Western Banded Snake Eagle, Racket-tailed
Roller, Collared Palm Thrush, Red-throated Twinspot, African Moustached
Warbler and Pel's Fishing Owl are some of Luangwa's highlights.
The diversity of mammals is amazing and includes one of the highest
populations of Leopard and Hippo in Africa. Thornicroft's Giraffe
is an endemic subspecies to the Valley and other interesting mammals
include Crawshay's Zebra, Yellow Baboon and Puku.
Game Drives & Walks:
Activities include drives in the Park in an open safari vehicle
set up with the specialized sound equipment and headphones, and
walks in the "pitta patch" with an armed scout. On the
first night Derek will give a slide/audio presentation on "Sounds
of the Bush". During the weekend there will be excellent
photographic opportunities, and activities will include night
drives to look for nightjars, owls and other nocturnal wildlife.

Not included are the one off park entry fee of US$20, bar, international
flights, airport departure taxes, visa fees (if applicable), gratuities
and items of a personal nature.
Tips and Notes
Advance bookings are essential due to very limited availability
The mighty Victoria Falls and Livingstone are a simple connection
from Lusaka and should be considered as an extension to this trip
It is not necessary to be a birder to join this trip but you
do need an interest in learning more about birds to enjoy it!
