The Luangwa Valley Explorer is a 7 night, 8 day combination lodge and bush camp safari in the South Luangwa National Park.

The safari can be done in reverse sequence i.e. Bush camps followed by Mfuwe Lodge. The following is a guideline itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive at Lusaka airport ex international flight. Connect to scheduled flight to Mfuwe airport. The flight takes approximately one hour and ten minutes. On arrival at Mfuwe you will be met and driven to Mfuwe Lodge through the main entrance to the South Luangwa Park over the main bridge.

Mfuwe Lodge is situated on an ox bow lagoon inside the park.  It is the perfect place to acclimatize and start a safari after a long international flight.

Each of the 18 luxury chalets is decorated with superb attention to detail and is equipped with everything from a refrigerator to shampoo and mosquito repellent.

Each sunken bath has a private view of the lagoon. The chalets have their own viewing decks, game activity at the lagoon continues day and night as an abundant variety of game come to quench their thirst.

For quieter moments the nature conservation library with its own deck shaded by giant ebony trees, offers a unique collection of antiquarian books and modern reference material. Meals are served in the chitenje (central facility) or out on the viewing deck.

Soft chairs and artefacts collected from many parts of Africa give an authentic 'old Africa' feel to the Lodge's lounge, dining room and bar area which has open fireplaces for cool winter evenings.

Dinner is sometimes served by lamplight on the poolside deck overlooking the lagoon.
An experienced and knowledgeable team of guides conducts game drives and walks and night drives, aided by a spotlight.

Guests will set off at first light or in the late afternoon when the wildlife is most active. Overnight Mfuwe Lodge.

Day 2: After an early morning activity and brunch, take a midday game drive south to the Manzi River, a dry tributary of the Luangwa River, where you will arrive at Kuyenda Bush Camp.

The camp is situated on an "island" in the middle of the Manzi River, 3 km from its confluence with the Luangwa. The Manzi is a sand river and only flows during the rainy season.

There are a number of springs with permanent water behind the camp, which are frequented by all the big game, hence this camps amazing reputation for predator sightings.
Accommodation is in reed under thatch huts with en suite facilities. The camp only caters for 6 people at any one time.
The camp is managed and run by Phil Berry and Babette Alfieri. Phil is regarded as the most experienced and well-reputed guide in the Luangwa Valley having spent some 40 years living and studying wildlife in the valley.
Activities include guided walks, game drives and night drives.

Day 3 and day 4: Kuyenda Camp.

Day 5: Brunch after your early morning game-viewing excursion. Transfer by road in an open game-viewing vehicle to your next camp - Chamilandu, Bilimungwe, Chindeni or Kapamba.

  • Chamilandu: wooden tree houses overlooking the Luangwa River,
  • Bilimungwe: built of reed and thatch, is situated at a waterhole.
  • Chindeni:  tented camp on an ox bow lagoon of the Luangwa.
  • Kapamba: brick under thatch chalets on the Kapamba river.

All 3 bush camps cater for 6 guests in en suite accommodation and concentrate on walking safaris and day and night drives in the remote southern sector of the Park. Each camp has a qualified guide and hostess.

The camps are typical bush camps, offering night drives, early morning and afternoon walks and drives. The cuisine is of a very high standard and the general feeling of luxury in a remote setting adds to the ambience of this area.
