An exotic island archipelago
Gorgeous beaches
The beautiful island archipelago of Zanzibar consists of over 50 islands
that are semi-autonomous, but part of Tanzania. The main island is
called Zanzibar Island or Unguja and features the World Heritage Site
of Stone Town: a fascinating, crumbling ruin of stunning architecture
and gripping history.
Stunning beaches, coral reefs and exotic resorts have also given Zanzibar
a reputation as one of the most romantic destinations in the world.
Zanzibar has an intriguing history going back centuries to when Arab
traders used the island as a base for all kinds of business: from
a major port for slaves coming from Africa, to the spices for which
the island was called Spice Island. At one point, Zanzibar was one
of the biggest producers of cloves in the world. It is still a producer
of various spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, tumeric and vanilla.
