This jewel of East Africa is one of the top tourist destinations of
the region.
It has of the greatest game reserves in the world as well as stunning
beaches, exotic islands like Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia Island, and
the highest free-standing mountain in the world: Kilimanjaro.
Tanzania lies just south of the equator in East Africa. On
becoming independent, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form Tanzania.
Agriculture is the main economic activity, with products like coffee,
tea and cashew nuts. Zanzibar, historically known as the Spice Island,
is still one of the biggest producers of cloves and other spices like
cinnamon, nutmeg, tumeric and vanilla.
