Atmospheric coastline littered with ship wrecks
Part of a protected reserve
The Skeleton Coast is a scenic stretch of coast along 500km of the
country's western border. It forms part of the Skeleton Coast Park,
of which only the southern part is accessible to the public. This
section, lying between the Ugab and the Hoanib Rivers, is popular
for its excellent fishing.
Access to the northern parts is restricted, but it is here where the
famous ship wrecks lie - from which the coast takes it name: the wrecks
lie like skeletons along the coast, normally covered by swirling mists.
The notoriously stormy waters and desolate coast has struck fear into
many a mariner's heart for centuries - for good reason!
