The world's largest saltpan
Seasonally home to thousands of flamingoes
The main pans of Sowa, Nxai and Ntwetwe along with numerous small
ones, fill up after the rain, drawing loads of animals, especially
birds.
It is thought that the makgadikgadi saltpans used to be a huge lake
that dried up, only to be filled with water seasonally after rain.
Then fish and aquatic shrimp flourish, providing a fertile feeding
ground for thousands of waterbirds - especially huge flocks of flamingoes
- making for dramatic photography.
