The Luangwa best for its remote location, lack of crowds,
intense wildlife and simple "wild-ness". A "home from
home" for most of us, the kind of place that attracts like-minded
people, mostly independent types:
with an aversion to "packaged holidays", a sensible
distaste for crowds when taking a break,
and when going on safari prefer untamed spots
who're naturally averse to "pre-planned trips" but
sensibly appreciate that pre-planning is the
best way to get the most out of Africa's remoter regions.
If you've found accurate information on Zambia and gained a better
appreciation for the Luangwa and the people who live in this remote
valley, then our site has done its job.
If you're interested in planning a safari or simply wish to find out
more information then you need to speak to our support team at the
Zambezi Safari and Travel Company .
Meet the team
With regional offices in Southern Africa and a head office in
the UK we've tried to create a secure infrastructure to deal with
clients in the First World and cope with the vagaries of life in the
Third - it works most of the time, we quite frankly "make a plan"
for the rest.
We have a fine team of enthusiastic and professional consultants with
some inspired "back-room" people manning these far-flung
offices .
Trish Berry with Jet
the labrador
Nikki Hinde and
Liz Ferreira
Trish Berry leads the charge from the UK. Born and raised in
Marondera, Zimbabwe, Trish studied in South Africa where she had a
taste of work in the fast lane before opting for a return to life
in the bush. After six years as managing director in Kariba she took
over management of the UK Head Office in 2000.
Trish oversees the parent company's financial, ground-handling and
consulting functions and is a director and shareholder of independent
tour operating companies in Zimbabwe, Zambia and the UK. Aside from
spending much of her time running the UK hub, Trish also spends a
few months each year assisting clients with their safari plans throughout
Southern Africa.
A mother of two semi-tame children, two over-energetic Labradors,
one tolerant cat and an intolerable husband Trish is always keen to
take a break on safari herself. Her loyalties to family and business
fade when the chance for some gardening and a cup of tea comes up.
Nikki Hinde runs the Harare office. Born and raised in Bulawayo,
Zimbabwe, Nikki joined our Kariba office in 1997.
Nikki naturally became our walking safari and canoeing specialist
and is a star for planning trips into lesser-trodden spots in Botswana,
northern Zimbabwe, Southern Tanzania, Malawi and the Luangwa.
Nikki's penchant is the ability to take carefully constructed First
World order, turn it into chaos and then reorganise based on Third
World reality. Nobody on the planet does better! (The lady is a dab
hand at fixing broken phone lines and computers.)
When not tending the only child in her household (her husband), Nix
manages a seriously demanding menagerie of "cat-ruled" mutts
- Sprocket, Polony, Tessa, Kipper and Buster. Civet is the cat in
charge, ably assisted by Marmalade, Moona, Sooty and Twinkle.
Liz Ferreira is a "valley veteran" - totally accustomed
to the unforgiving heat of late spring, summer and early autumn. Liz
manages our Kariba offices with a full compliment of consultants,
ground handling and accounts staff. Liz is also a safari consultant
for trips in the South Luangwa and further afield in Botswana, Namibia
and Zimbabwe.
An absolute stickler for detail and custodian of every bit of valuable
product, client or backup data, Liz is one of the more sensible and
relaxed individuals in the company so long as everything is going
precisely to plan.
When plans fail, young Matthew is in good hands as Liz's "lesser
half" takes up his fishing rod and heads for calmer waters with
lad in tow. Liz always finds a solution and the boys always catch
the fish.
Liz keeps neither dogs nor domestic cats because of the resident leopard
in her neighbourhood.
Don't ignore the back-office teams
Our in-house team packs a fair punch with additional support from
Chris, Jenny, Delene, Carol, Misi, Princess, Dee and John.
We've taken some time to catch up with technology in Africa - another
relatively small team based in Cape Town handles our Internet presence.
Kudos to Jo, Rob, Dave and Pete.
Sometimes the more important stuff is done by people you're unlikely
to see or hear from - spare them some time if you ever meet them on
safari!
